Le Guin returned to Earthsea after an 18-year hiatus. Her perspective had shifted, influenced by feminism and deeper Taoist philosophy. These books deconstruct some of the "heroic" tropes established in the first trilogy.

However, there is some confusion regarding the reading order. Originally a trilogy, the series was revisited by Le Guin nearly two decades later, resulting in a completed "Cycle" of six books.

You’ll notice a massive gap between The Farthest Shore (1972) and Tehanu (1990). Le Guin changed significantly as a writer during this time. The first three books feel like traditional high fantasy legends. The final three books (including the short stories) are more deconstructive and philosophical.
