The most grueling part was the stunt sequences. Unlike studio films where wires are hidden by CGI, the Thodari cast had to perform atop a moving train (safely harnessed, but terrifying nonetheless).
Filming Thodari wasn't a luxury cruise. The cast and crew spent weeks living out of the train compartments as they traveled from Chennai to Delhi. It was a suffocating, claustrophobic experience that Director Prabhu Solomon insisted upon. He wanted the exhaustion, the boredom, and the restlessness to be real.
One night, somewhere near Jhansi, the train halted for a scheduled shoot under the stars. The air was thick. Dhanush and the supporting cast, including the veteran actor Harish Uthaman (playing the inspector), sat on the tracks sharing stories. Harish, who played the antagonist, noted how the isolation brought the cast closer. "We aren't just acting like passengers," he said, sipping tea from a steel tumbler. "We are passengers. We eat together, sleep in these bunks together, and wake up to the same rhythm."
"There are no greenscreens here," Dhanush laughed during the initial script read, looking around at the actual train compartments secured by the team. "The rocking motion of the train is going to act better than I can."
