He’d expected a cheap fan game. What he got was a cold draft against his neck and the smell of damp earth. His bedroom vanished. He was standing in the center of the Glade, and four other teenagers were already there, panicking.
As the video ends, a squad of soldiers bursts in and rescues the teens. They are whisked away to a bus, thinking they are finally safe.
“It’s learning our patterns,” Leo shouted, dodging into a side passage. “This isn’t a game. It’s a training simulation for something real.”
He never clicked it again. But sometimes, late at night, he’d hear the walls moving. Just faintly. And he’d wonder if the Maze was still waiting for someone else to hit that green button.
The sun disappears, replaced by a dull artificial gray sky. The walls stop closing at night, leaving the Glade open to the Grievers. The creators of the Maze (an organization called WICKED ) are forcing the survivors to make a choice: stay and die, or enter the Maze and fight for an escape.
