According to legend, Gaspar was a high-ranking Spanish naval officer who mutinied in the late 18th century, stole a ship, and fled to the Gulf of Mexico. He is said to have amassed a massive fortune by plundering merchant ships and kidnapping high-society women, eventually making his base on Captiva Island.
