To save her, Jamie publicly confesses that Claire is his wife, making it illegal for her to be tried separately from him as a clansman’s wife. The mob turns on Geillis, who is condemned to burn at the stake.

At the trial, Geillis delivers a show-stopping performance, but the climax comes when she reveals she is —and more shockingly, that she is from the future , just like Claire. She admits to killing her husband Arthur Duncan to protect her secret. When Claire is ordered to prove her own innocence by exposing her “witch’s mark” (a mole on her thigh), Jamie bursts in, grabs her, and dramatically declares that the only devil’s mark on her body is his own—by way of marriage.
