The episode masterfully balances three eras: the 1996 survival struggle, the survivors' 1998 rescue (confirmed to be after two years), and the present-day cover-up. Look for: The episode picks up roughly two

In the opening scenes within the cabin, the x265 encode threatens to wash out the subtle texture of the wood and the breath-fog in the air. Where a higher bitrate or a raw Blu-ray rip would preserve the "noise" of the film stock, an x265 release often creates "banding" in the shadows. This is detrimental to a show that relies on the "uncanny valley" of the dark; the pixelation of shadows in the attic scene reduces the visceral fear of the unknown into a sometimes muddy visual soup.

However, the "macro-blocking" that can occur in x265 releases during high-contrast transitions (such as sudden cuts from the dark attic to a flashback) disrupts the rhythmic editing. The premiere relies on jagged, jarring cuts to simulate the fragmented psyche of the characters. When the digital file introduces its own fragmentation through compression artifacts, the line between artistic choice and technical flaw blurs.

This show is dark—literally. Half of it takes place in a snowy forest at night, and the other half in shadowy basements. x265 handles black gradients and snow texture much better than x264 at the same file size. For S02E01, a good x265 encode (usually around ) can look 90-95% as good as a 2GB Bluray rip.
