Smashing Pumpkins Discography In Order (PLUS)

Political hard rock, return-to-form posturing. Review: The reunion (Corgan + Chamberlin, new bassist Ginger Reyes) arrives with clenched fists. “Doomsday Clock” and “Tarantula” are satisfyingly angry, but the songwriting is one-note. Corgan’s lyrics trade vulnerability for vague anti-Bush slogans. Missing D’arcy and Iha’s melodic grounding, the album feels like a Corgan solo project with better drumming. Not bad, but forgettable. Grade: 5/10 – Loud but hollow.

The band's story begins in 1988 when Billy Corgan (vocals, guitar) and James Iha (guitar) met while attending the University of Chicago. They recruited D'arcy Wretzky (bass) and Jimmy Chamberlin (drums) to complete the original lineup. The Smashing Pumpkins self-released their debut album, Gish (1991), which gained moderate attention but laid the groundwork for their future success.

In 2009, the Smashing Pumpkins embarked on an ambitious project: Teargarden by Kaleidyscope , a series of EPs released through the band's website. This innovative approach allowed fans to support the band directly and receive exclusive content. The EPs were eventually compiled into a full album, Oceania (2012), which featured the critically acclaimed single "The Star-Spangled Banner." Political hard rock, return-to-form posturing

After a six-year hiatus, the original lineup reunited, and the Smashing Pumpkins released Zeitgeist (2007), which featured the hit single "The Resistance." The album received positive reviews and demonstrated the band's ability to create new music while honoring their legacy.

The band's latest releases, Cyr (2020) and ATUM: A Rock Opera in Three Acts (2022), demonstrate their continued creativity and experimentation. Cyr featured a more aggressive, post-punk sound, while ATUM returned to a more classic Smashing Pumpkins style, with a focus on storytelling and conceptual cohesion.
