S01e06 M4a - Outlander

"The Garrison Commander" is arguably the most important episode of the first season. It defines the villain, it breaks the protagonist, and it forces the marriage plot that drives the rest of the series. It is unafraid to be talky and slow, trusting that the menace of a single man in a red coat is more frightening than a battlefield of screaming Highlanders.

: This episode solidifies Randall as a "calm and calculated antagonist" rather than a cartoonish villain. Menzies plays Jack with a chilling duality. We see him dining with Claire (Caitriona Balfe), pouring wine, discussing poetry, and displaying a sharp, cynical wit. There is a moment where he nearly charms the audience; we see the ghost of Frank, the modern husband Claire misses so desperately. Menzies captures the audience by showing us the man Claire wants to see, making the eventual unveiling of his sadism all the more disturbing.
