This paper explores the "First Studio"—defined as the initial, often improvised, workspace occupied by an emerging artist—as a critical site of professional formation. Moving beyond conventional discussions of pedagogy or talent, this study examines how the material constraints and spatial limitations of the first studio shape the early stylistic development of practitioners. Through interviews with ten mid-career visual artists, we identify a recurring pattern wherein the limitations of the "first studio" (e.g., lack of storage, poor lighting, domestic interference) act not as impediments, but as catalysts for specific procedural adaptations. We argue that the "first studio" functions as a transitional object in the career lifecycle, providing a necessary "sandbox" for risk-taking that is often lost in the transition to professionalized, larger ateliers. The findings suggest that the material memory of the first studio persists in the methodologies of established artists long after they have vacated the physical space.
