Developed by the legendary Nazca Corporation (and later SNK), the games were animated frame-by-frame. When a soldier eats too much food and becomes obese, his animations change entirely. When a mummy spits a swarm of locusts, the screen fills with individual sprites without a hint of slowdown (assuming your emulator settings are correct).

: Available on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.

The Metal Slug ROM community is unique because it is technically demanding. The games used massive "Graphics ROMs" (GFX) to store the sprites. In the early days of emulation, these files were difficult to dump and required powerful PCs to run.

While arcades have largely faded into nostalgia, the series has survived through emulation. Searching for "Metal Slug ROMs" isn't just about piracy; for many, it is the only way to access some of the most expensive and beautiful video games ever created.
