Blocked Central Heating Pipes ((full)) Jun 2026

Cold at bottom of rads = sludge. One pipe hot, one pipe cold = blockage. Drain, cut, vacuum for a DIY fix if you’re handy, but realistically, book a powerflush and fit a magnetic filter. Your boiler will thank you.

For severe blockages, a professional powerflush is the most effective solution. A heating engineer connects a high-velocity pumping unit to the system and pushes water and strong cleaning chemicals through the pipes at high speed. This dislodges sludge and debris, which are then flushed out of the system. blocked central heating pipes

Before calling a plumber, check your system type. If you have microbore (small plastic or copper pipes like spaghetti), you are high risk. Those block permanently and often require full repiping. If you have standard 22mm/15mm copper, a powerflush will save you. Cold at bottom of rads = sludge

: Very thin pipes are highly susceptible to solid blockages from hardened sludge. Methods for Resolving Blockages Locating and resolving blockage | Screwfix Community Forum Your boiler will thank you

: Debris often collects where pipe diameters change or flow slows down, such as at a radiator's Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV) or a manifold.

After the powerflush, I had them install:

If a radiator is cold at the top, releasing the trapped air via the bleed valve may resolve the issue. However, if the gas returns quickly, it may indicate hydrogen gas produced by internal corrosion, suggesting a deeper sludge problem.
