Active Transport — Protein Portable

In the medical field, active transport proteins are major targets for drug development. Many medications work by either blocking or enhancing the activity of these pumps. For example, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) treat acid reflux by shutting down the active transport proteins responsible for pumping hydrogen ions into the stomach. Similarly, understanding how bacteria use "efflux pumps" to spit out antibiotics is a key area of research in the fight against drug-resistant superbugs.
