Agatha Christie 10 Negritos Site

Each death mirrors the “Ten Little Soldier Boys” rhyme – but the killer manipulates order and method to create confusion.

If you ask any mystery fan to name the greatest "locked-room" thriller of all time, one title invariably rises to the top. Whether you know it as Ten Little Niggers (the 1939 original UK title), Ten Little Indians , or the now-definitive And Then There Were None

In the original title, “negritos” referred to the ten figures in the nursery rhyme. But the human characters are the heart of the novel. Listed in order of death (with the rhyme’s method): agatha christie 10 negritos

The setup is iconic in its simplicity. Ten strangers are invited to a mansion on an isolated island off the Devon coast (Soldier Island) under various pretexts (a job offer, a holiday, a reunion). Upon arrival, their mysterious host is absent.

“I had a definite object in view… to satisfy my own sense of justice. I am, by nature, a judge.” – Wargrave’s confession Each death mirrors the “Ten Little Soldier Boys”

Upon arrival, a framed nursery rhyme hangs in each bedroom: “Ten little soldier boys went out to dine…” After dinner, a gramophone record accuses each guest of a specific murder that the law could not touch. Then, one by one, they begin to die exactly as the rhyme predicts – a choking, a sleeping pill, a bee sting, a red herring, etc. But the human characters are the heart of the novel

As the bodies pile up, the survivors project their guilt onto each other. The most interesting psychological portrait is Vera Claythorne – she slowly unravels because she knows she is truly guilty of letting a child drown. The island becomes a conscience made manifest.
