An X-Ray texture pack works by modifying the textures of "filler" blocks like Stone, Dirt, Gravel, and Netherrack. By making these blocks transparent or completely invisible, the game only renders the blocks you actually care about: Diamonds, Gold, Iron, Coal, and Lapis.
