Denji, a teenage devil hunter, lives in crushing poverty with his chainsaw devil partner, Pochita. To repay his yakuza debt, Denji hunts weak devils. Betrayed by the yakuza (who made a contract with a zombie devil), Denji is killed. Pochita makes a contract with him, becoming Denji’s heart. Denji revives as the Chainsaw Man — able to sprout chainsaws from his arms and head. He slaughters the zombies and is recruited by the government’s Public Safety Devil Hunters.

A new devil hunter, Himeno (Aki’s partner), is jealous of Makima’s hold on Denji. She gets Denji drunk and tries to sleep with him, but he passes out. The next day, they hunt the Katana Man (a human with a sword-blade head) and his partner, the Sawatari (with a snake devil).
