Reddy (who would later direct the first Telugu talkie) and funded by the legendary filmmaker Ardeshir Irani (who made India’s first sound film, Alam Ara ), Bhakta Prahlada was shot as a silent film in 1931. The team tried to add soundtracks and songs, hoping to release it as a "talkie."

Imagine this: A single microphone hidden in a flowerpot on set. Actors had to stand unnaturally still to be heard. The camera was hand-cranked. The "editing" was done by physically cutting and taping film strips. The film told the mythological story of the young devotee Prahlada and Lord Narasimha. It starred Sindhoori Krishna Rao as Prahlada and Munipalle Subbayya as Hiranyakashipu.
