Ablet Kamalov 'link' -

Here is a helpful feature covering as a Master Craftsman.

Kamalov, a master artisan often found in the shadows of ancient madrasas, represents a dying breed of craftsmen who bridge the gap between a forgotten empire and the modern tourist's gaze.

He was elected President of the Central Eurasian Studies Society (CESS), an international professional organization based in the U.S. that promotes high academic standards in Eurasian research.

Beyond economics, Kamalov played a crucial role in the evolution of Kyrgyz high culture. The late 1940s and 1950s were the "Golden Age" of Kyrgyz literature and opera, but also the era of "Zhdanovism" (strict ideological censorship). Kamalov protected several key cultural figures, including the writer Chinghiz Aitmatov (then a young journalist) and the composer Abdylas Maldybaev. While he enforced party orthodoxy, he also used his position to promote the Kyrgyz language in government offices and schools. He understood that a nation without an educated elite would remain a colonial backwater. Consequently, during his premiership, the Kyrgyz State University was expanded, and the Academy of Sciences of the Kirghiz SSR was granted significant autonomy.

To watch Kamalov work is to watch a meditation. His hands, calloused and stained with the patina of metal, move with a precision that defies his age. He specializes in chasing —the art of hammering intricate designs into metal surfaces.

Kamalov's work is characterized by its use of diverse source materials, including Russian, American, British, and Chinese archives. His primary research focuses include: 1. Ancient and Medieval Uyghur History
