This three-episode series is a sequel to the 1997 cult hit Agent Aika , and it proudly carries the weirdest torch in anime history: the "panty shot for plot advancement." But beneath the shameless fanservice lies something genuinely fascinating — a retro-futuristic action-comedy that feels like James Bond if Bond were a teenage girl in a miniskirt, fighting corporate espionage with judo chops and gravitational anomalies.

Character development is the core strength of this prequel. Viewers see a younger, slightly more vulnerable Aika. While she is still incredibly capable, she lacks the cold professional cynicism of her older self. The OVA also introduces Karen Minamino, who serves as a foil to Aika. Their developing partnership provides the emotional backbone of the series, illustrating the importance of trust and teamwork in the dangerous world of international salvage.

Aika R-16: Virgin Mission is not a good anime in the traditional sense. It’s tasteless, repetitive, and proudly juvenile. But as a cultural artifact? It’s fascinating. It’s the last howl of the ecchi action OVA before streaming homogenized everything. If you can look past (or laugh at) the panty shots, you’ll find a stylish, energetic, and surprisingly charming adventure about a clumsy teenage girl trying to prove she’s more than her underwear.

Aika Sumeragi is a 16-year-old "salvager" (think deep-sea treasure hunter meets spy) hired to recover a mysterious artifact called the "Lagu" — a relic that controls gravity. Standing in her way are rival salvagers, a sinister corporation, and her own embarrassing lack of composure around her new partner, the cool and collected Karen. The story opens aboard the K2 company yacht. Aika is lounging on the deck in a high-cut bikini, enjoying a rare moment of peace. Suddenly, Eri bursts in wearing a fake beard and an eye patch, dramatically claiming to be a legendary pirate. "It renders you invisible to sensors," Eri explains,

Aika is hired by Eri Shinkai , the wealthy president of her school’s Treasure Hunting Club, to investigate a mystery involving a girl named Karen Minamino .
