Not attacking. Not scheming. Splooting —the full-body, belly-down, legs-akimbo sprawl of a creature that had given up on dignity entirely.

The Moist Velocity stopped its descent. Instead of landing, it seemed to bounce. It hit the sand with a wet splat , rebounded into the air, spun three times, and finally settled with a gelatinous wobble .

And Dr. Voss? She filed her report with a single photo attached: a googly-eyed, orange-fuzzed alien splooting next to a very relaxed xenobiologist, both of them belly-down in the mud, looking up at the stars as if to say: Come sploot with us. Not attacking

Splex peeled themselves off the console, reforming into their standard oblong shape. "We have arrived," they announced proudly, dripping slightly onto the floor mats. "The ship says the landing was... 'bouncy.'"

Jax looked out the viewscreen. The desert stretched out before them, golden and endless. But directly beneath the ship, in a perfect circle, the sand had been fused into green, shimmering glass by the sheer viscosity of the landing impact.
