Leo sat up, nearly dropping his popsicle. "What do you mean? If you stand closer to a campfire, you get hot. If you step back, you get cold. It’s science."
"It’s so hot," Leo groaned as his older sister, Maya, came out the front door. "It makes total sense, though."
Leo wiped his hands on his shorts and typed. His eyes widened as he read. "Wait. It says here that Earth is closest to the sun in January ? And furthest away in July ?"
She angled the top of the ball toward the sun's position in the sky. "Because we’re tilted toward it, the sunlight hits us more directly. It’s more concentrated. Plus, the days are longer, so we have more time to soak up that heat."
"But... but that doesn't make sense!" Leo stammered. "If we’re closer in January, why is it freezing cold?"
“You’ve got it,” Mom said.
