Detective Bess Till (Mickey Sumner) is no fool. She suspects Layton is Tail-born, but she needs his skills. Their interrogation of a Third Class suspect is a masterclass in tension – two people who don’t trust each other but can’t afford to fail.
Episode 2 wastes no time establishing stakes. The train is approaching a sharp mountain pass known as “The Wreck,” requiring all cars to “brace” – a rare event where the entire train feels the same physical danger. For a few tense minutes, class lines blur. Everyone, from the pampered First Class to the starving Tailies, experiences the same violent lurch.
As the passengers in the tail section struggle to survive, they discover a hidden compartment containing protein packs - a luxury food source that's been locked away for the elite passengers in the front of the train. Meanwhile, in the front of the train, Minister Mason and her team are trying to figure out what happened in the tail section. They review footage of the events and realize that Curtis and his group were involved in the uprising.

Following the events of the series premiere, (Daveed Diggs) begins his work as the "Train Detective". While ostensibly working for Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly) to solve the murder of Sean Wise, Layton is secretly using his access to the upper cars to gather intelligence for the Tailie revolution. Furthermore, the backstory of how the Tailies survived the boarding of the train—sacrificing their own limbs to feed the furnace—adds a layer of psychological weight to their current desperation. It explains why they are radicalized and why Layton is so hesitant to trust the system.
As the train rumbles on, the passengers in the tail section begin to ration the limited food supplies. The situation becomes increasingly dire, and tensions rise among the passengers.
