Severino Reyes, born in 1861 and famously known by his pen name , is hailed as the "Father of Tagalog Zarzuela". At the turn of the 20th century, Reyes sought to modernize Filipino theater by replacing the then-dominant moro-moro (highly stylized plays about Christian-Muslim conflicts) with the sarswela —a musical theater form that integrated song, poetry, and dialogue to reflect contemporary social issues.
