Originally from the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, she and her husband, Radhakrishna "Krish" Chilukuri , raised their children in San Diego.

Lakshmi's journey as a Hindu priestess began when she was ordained as a Hindu priest in 2004. She became one of the first women to be ordained as a Hindu priest in the United States. Her ordination was a significant milestone, not only for her but also for the Hindu community, as it marked a breakthrough for women's participation in Hindu leadership.
