Targeting Pack ~repack~ -

He wasn’t fast enough.

Kael looked at his own hands. They were the hands of a poet who had learned to fly a wolfpack. He wondered if there was any poetry left in the world, or if the targeting pack had finally devoured it all. He closed his eyes. When he opened them again, they were clear. Cold. Like a drone’s lens.

The Archivist’s last known signal was three levels down, in the old geothermal substation. The air grew warmer, wetter. Condensation dripped from pipes as thick as a man’s torso. Peaseblossom’s thermal lens showed a maze of heat signatures: rodents, fungal blooms, and then… a single, faint human-shaped glow, hunched over a console.

Elias navigated to the Microsoft Developer Pack download page, his hands shaking slightly from the caffeine. He watched the progress bar as the finally downloaded. He wasn’t fast enough

Their target: a man known as the Archivist. He wasn't a general or a politician. He was a whisper in the data-stacks, a ghost who carried the last uncorrupted copy of the continental water-grid schematics on a mem-stick the size of a child’s fingernail. He had gone to ground in the Sundered Quarter, a district of collapsed arcologies and acidic fogs where the old world had been scoured down to its rusting bones.

: This allows a single development environment, like Visual Studio, to compile code for multiple different versions of the .NET Framework without needing the full runtime of every version installed. He wondered if there was any poetry left

The drone’s designation was Wasp-14, but its handler, a gaunt man named Kael, called it “Peaseblossom.” He was sentimental that way, a flaw the military-psych evaluators had flagged three times. He’d argued, successfully, that a spot of poetry helped him fly the machine better. The brass, needing every pilot, had let it slide.
